Tarpon Inn

The amenities, the services, the facts-and some very nice little touches.

Key West, Texas?  You didn’t know that a place like that exists in Texas?  Once you’ve seen the Tarpon Inn in Port Aransas, you’ll swear that you are in Key West.  With its 200 foot long porches and Key West cottage architecture , nothing outside the Florida Keys will remind you so much of the destination resort made famous by the likes of Ernest Hemingway and Zane Gray.  Tarpon, Texas, bet you haven’t heard of that place either.

Tarpon , Texas was the previous name given to the area on the bank of the Aransas Pass on Mustang Island.  The small fishing village got its name from the abundant tarpon schools in the area and this seemingly unlimited fishery was the inception of the big game fishing industry in Texas.  The historic Tarpon Inn was where many of those initial big game fishermen were quartered and many of the tarpon scales from the fish they caught are still displayed in the hotel office.  The Tarpon Inn was made famous by the likes of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Hedy Lamarr and Duncan Hines, who all used the Tarpon Inn, as their island retreat while big game fishing in the surrounding waters.

We have recently undergone a major-but gentle-restoration. If you will be a first-time guest, we think you'll enjoy your experience here. If you've been our guest before, you will love the Tarpon more than ever!

The Inn now has 31 rooms - 24 at the Inn and 7 at the Flats, 9 of these are suites.  Plus we have a condo, one bedroom house and an efficiency apartment.

All rooms open to our shady porch and they all have air conditioning, heating and a private bath.  Each room is furnished in period antiques and no two rooms are alike. Each room has its’ own distinctive and individual personality.  We will do our very best to match you with the one that’s right for you.  You might want to think about scheduling your visit in the spring, fall or winter months.  Port Aransas generally has mild winters and much less crowded conditions, during these times of year and the beach will feel like it’s all yours.

The rooms are television and phone free, so your stay at the Tarpon Inn is truly an escape and a sanctuary.  Of course, if you’d like the “outside world” to be able to reach you, we will gladly pass on any messages you might receive during your stay.

For those guests who think they can't possibly survive without e-mail, each room has wi-fi. (We can only hope the Tarpon's magic will eventually mellow them out.)
Our main lobby has complimentary coffee, a television, and walls covered with an amazing collection of autographed tarpon fish scales. (See our History page for a little more about those scales).

Our pool area has an ample supply of loungers, access to the bar area, for dood and drinks. Enjoy your food and drink in the shade of our authentic, hand built palapa. We have horseshoe and washer pits available for your pleasure.

The trolley stops right at the corner several times a day and goes directly to the beach.  The trolley will take you to many other points of interest for a token fee of 25 cents.

We now have “Fine Dining” in our courtyard with the newly opened Roosevelt’s.  For a celebration you will remember for a lifetime, let the capable staff at the Tarpon Inn arrange a room and dining experience for that special occasion, such as birthdays and anniversaries. For a lifetime of wonderful memories, we now provide our hotel, courtyard and restaurant for weddings, anniversaries, quinceanera’s and other special occasions.  These same facilities are available to companies and groups for sales meetings, family reunions and other similar functions.
